Dr. Russ Waitman is an assistant professor of biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His main responsibility is the continued maintenance, development, and commercialization of WizOrder, the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system at VUMC. Vanderbilt is working with McKesson Corporation to make CPOE with clinical decision support available commercially as Horizon Expert Orders. He received his masters and doctorate in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University. The title of his master’s thesis was "Representation and Classification of Breath Sounds Recorded in an Intensive Care Setting Using Neural Networks" and his dissertation was titled "Knowledge Discovery in Perioperative Databases using Bootstrapped Rule Induction". Prior to returning to graduate school, he was an officer in the United States Air Force where he served as a hospital administrator and clinical engineer at the 74th Medical Group (Wright-Patterson Medical Center), Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio. He received my BS in electrical engineering from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Russ' research interests include: knowledge discovery in databases, the stability of rule induction, physiologic data collection, and biomedical signal processing.
